Tuesday night will be a panel discussion in SMATE 150 at WWU on November 25th at 7 pm. The panel is made up of members of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, tribal youth, scientist, and representatives from the city of Port Angeles and the Olympic National Park.
The panel will be addressing the ecological and cultural impacts the dam has had on the region as well as what will happen once the dams are removed. The panel will give the audience a better understanding of colonialism, American Indian fishing rights and how activism and organizing pushed the removal process along.
This event will also address how environmental justice and social justice are intertwined. This panel discussion will be a great way to learn more about a long term local issue that has a solution in sight; and hear from the people directly linked to the restoration of the river and the culture of a community.
The second day of the two day Elwha event is put on by Western's Environmental Center, Social Issues Resource Center and Native American Student Union.
