A showing of the documentary, Unconquering the Last Frontier: The Restoration of a River and a Culture in the Fairhaven auditorium on November 24th at 7 pm.
The documentary focuses on the construction of the 1910 dam on the Elwha River and the effect that it had on the Native Elwha Klallam people who relied heavily on the river.
The film describes the 90 year struggle of the Elwha tribal community to lobby for the removal of the dams and the restoration of the river’s ecology. The documentary will give a good background on the issue prior to the panel discussion on Tuesday, November 25th.
The Elwha Dam two day event is put on by Western Washington University's Environmental Center, the Social Issues Resource Center and the Native American Student Union.
