World Issues Forum On Exxon Oil Spill (12:00PM - 1:30PM)
"Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill"
Riki Ott. PhD marine biologist and independent environmental researcher and writer in Alaska.
December 3, Noon-1:30pm, Fairhaven College Auditorium
Spanning nearly 40 years, Dr. Ott in her recent book, Not One Drop, describes an extraordinary tale of ordinary people who take on the world’s richest oil companies and most powerful politicians to protect Prince William Sound from oil accidents. Author Riki Ott, a rare combination of commercial salmon "fisherma'am" and PhD marine biologist, describes the firsthand impact of this broken promise when the Exxon Valdez oil spill decimated Cordova, Alaska, a small commercial fishing community set in 38,000 square miles of rugged Alaska wilderness.

Riki Ott At Fairhaven College & Village Books (All Day)
RIKI OTT
-NOT ONE DROP: BETRAYAL AND COURAGE IN THE WAKE OF THE EXXON VALDEZ SPILL
Time: Wednesday, December 3, 2008
Noon-1:30pm, Fairhaven College Auditorium (World Issues Forum)
And 7:00 p.m. at Village Books
CSPAN's Book TV will be on hand at Village Books to film this event!
Betrayed by oilmen's promises in the 1970s, the people of Prince William Sound, Alaska, awaken on March 14, 1989, to the nation's largest oil spill. Not One Drop is an extraordinary tale of ordinary lives and an exceptional ecosystem ripped apart by disaster, and of environmental recovery and community healing through forging trust-based relationships on the path from despair to hope. This story offers critical lessons for a society traumatized by political divides and facing the looming catastrophe of global climate change.
A commercial salmon "fisherma'am," Dr. Riki Ott (PhD in marine biology) experienced firsthand the devastating effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill-and chose to do something about it. Ott retired from fishing and founded three nonprofit organizations to deal with lingering harm. Her previous book on the spill is Sound Truth and Corporate Myth$. She lives in Cordova, Alaska.
This event is co-sponsored by The Women's Maritime Association and North Sound Baykeeper, a project of RE Sources.

Center For Local Self Reliance Open House (6:00PM - 8:00PM)
Plans are underway to create a Center for Local Self Reliance at the former site of the Fairhaven Rose Gardens.
There will be an open house on December 4, 6-8pm at the Fairhaven Library to learn more about this worthy project.
The Center for Local Self Reliance (CLSR) teaches gardening, food preservation, seed saving, medicinal plant preparation, and other self reliance skills. We are Bellingham neighbors, builders, gardeners, business owners, and educators who care about our community and see opportunity at the Caretaker’s House.
The City of Bellingham has granted CLSR a long-term lease for the Caretaker’s House and grounds. Our goal is to renovate the house in order to offer gathering and teaching spaces, including a commercial kitchen where canning, food
preservation, medicinal plant preparation, and other domestic arts will be taught.
The Caretaker’s Garden will include beautiful food gardens, orchards, berry patches, medicinal plant and herb gardens, and a small outdoor amphitheater for intimate home made music gatherings. Community members of all ages will gather at the Caretaker’s House to teach and learn from one another. Join us as we create a new vision of a resilient and self-reliant community at the Caretaker’s House!
Website: http://www.caretakershouse.org/
If you're looking for a local community organization to give a holiday gift to, this would be a good one (The City of Bellingham has set a benchmark for this nonprofit of raising $75,000 by March in order to move forward with plans).

Changing The Dream Open Space Salon (7:00PM - 9:30PM)
Changing the Dream Open Space Salon was birthed from many requests of the attendees of the Oct.'07 Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium we held here in Bellingham. (www.awakeningthedreamer.org)
We gather to talk about issues that were brought forth at the Symposium - environmental sustainability, spiritual fulfillment and social justice (all being one issue, really). Many people are in need of a place to share their concerns or are just plain inspired to connect with like minded folks, to figure out what and who they are in these changing times. Sometimes the conversations are vibrant and stimulating, other times they are clarifying and bonding and sometimes just downright revolutionary.
We do not spend time teaching or convincing about what is going on - there are plenty of sources for that. So, if you are 'up to speed' on the state of the world, come join (y)our Salon with an open mind and an open heart. There is no commitment to attend every event or even more than one event. We just hope you will be inspired to do so.
Please arrive on time - if you need to arrive late, we will not introduce you until we find a good moment to break the flow of the conversation.
