Breaking The Siege Of Gaza (7:00PM - 8:00PM)
“Breaking the Siege of Gaza ”

Jeff Halper, an Israeli-American Anthropologist, author, lecturer, political activist, and co-founder and Coordinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD).

October 8, Noon-1:30, Fairhaven College Auditorium

7:00-9:00 Christ the Servant Lutheran Church , 2600 Lakeway

Jeff Halper, one of 44 activists from 17 nations who successfully sailed from Cyprus to Gaza aboard two fishing boats in defiance of Israel 's blockade this past August will address the situation and voices of the people of Gaza . Halper was the only Israeli Jew on this historic challenge to Israel ’s blockade of this besieged territory. From that perspective, he will share understandings he upholds: (1) the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is political and as such it has a political solution; (2) the Palestinians are not our enemies and (3) as the infinitely stronger party in the conflict and the only Occupying Power, Israelis must accept responsibility for our failed and oppressive policies. His most recent book is: An Israeli In Palestine: Resisting Dispossession, Redeeming Israel.

Jeff Halper, born in Minnesota , is an Israeli-American anthropologist, author, lecturer, political activist, and co-founder and Cooardinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD). In 1997 Halper was nominated by the American friends Service Committee for the Nobel Peace Prize together with the Palestinian intellectual and activist, Ghassan Andoni, for his work in liberating both Palestinian and the Israeli people from structural violence and building equality between their people. Halper is the author of several books and is a frequent writer and speaker about Israeli politics and culture. Most recently in August 2008, Halper participated in “Breaking the Seige of Gaza”.

WWU Environmental Club Summit (5:30PM - 7:00PM)
The club summit will be held on October 16th at 5:30pm in Haggard Hall. It is an event for those interested in environmental clubs on campus and environmental organizations in the community to come together to discuss plans for the year, what they want to see from the Environmental Center and what events they would like to have/see/co-sponsor with the Environmental Center and each other. It is a good way to build a stronger environmental community within Western Washington University and between Western and the Bellingham community. We will also be having a representative from the Port of Bellingham, come give a presentation on the progress of the waterfront development plan and get student and community input on the planning process

Vicki Robin In Bellingham : Feeling Free In A Finite World (6:30PM - 9:00PM)
Vicki Robin in Bellingham :
“Feeling Free In A Finite World”

Come meet and hear Vicki Robin,

co-author of the international bestseller,
Your Money or Your Life

Vicki was a cofounder of many social enterprises among which are:
Center for a New American Dream, the New Road Map Foundation, Sustainable Seattle, Transition Whidbey and The Turning Tide Coalition. This social innovating think/feel tank “spun off”
Conversation Cafes and The Pachamama Alliance’s Symposium that references her work: A Manifesto for These Times.

We live in the "era of limits". Food and energy prices are going up. Climate's changing. Resources are strained from a growing population.
What's an American used to freedom to do? ……………………Celebrate!
We live in the most challenging and therefore creative of times. We can transform our relationship with limits and liberate vast amounts of energy for change.

Understanding, embracing and transforming limits can make the difference between dithering and mastery in our personal and collective work.
It's not left wing or right wing, it's up wing - a frame that encompasses polarities. Expanding on the principles in YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE, Vicki will talk about this new work on "liberating."

Changing The Dream Open Space Salon (7:00PM - 9:30PM)

Changing the Dream Open Space Salon

Please consider coming to work toward building a world that will work
for all:  gather and share perspective, build community and awareness,
inspire and be inspired about the changes we are facing with regards to
issues around social justice, spiritual fulfillment and environmental
issues.
If you would like to bring someone you feel is 'up to speed'
on the issues, feel free to do so.  We don't want to spend a lot of
time convincing people of what is going on – we want to connect,
inspire, be inspired, re-frame, and...  get to the root of where we are
and how we will face the changes – each of us separately and together.

At our next Salon:
Again, I am leaving this one open – since we are close to the election, maybe people will be carrying political energy.  I
also just finished reading a great book that is a collection of about
10 years of Indigenous speakers who have presented at the Bioneers
Conferences.  The title is Original Instructions; Indigenous Teachings
for a Sustainable Future.  What I was looking for when attracted to
this book was wisdom from those who may have before, walked a similar
path that we are now faced with.  Where did they find their strengths?
What did they face – from their perspective?  What do they have to
teach us that will help change this world?  My perspective is that
change needs to happen within an individual if change is to happen in
family and community.  The teachings from this book did shift my
perspective and I am still holding those teachings near to my heart as
I integrate them into my actions.  Perhaps this topic might be a good
jumping off point?

At our last Salon:

The financial state of the nation was the jumping off point at the Salon.  After each of us
checking in as to where we were regarding the world of finance, we
talked a lot about putting money where we need it – investing locally
in businesses and farms that can help build the infrastructure we may
be needing locally that we now depend on importing from out of the
bioregion; providing for our food, water, shelter, healthcare, and
education for the future; and that followed into how to and how much
food to store food for the winter; connecting with neighbors and
realizing how important it could be to have those connections pre-made
rather than waiting for a crisis to hit and then knocking on their
doors; and...that led into Transition Towns and Transition Initiatives
www.transitiontowns.org and what that is all about – community
resilience in the face of post peak oil being led by the community
members itself using the principles of permaculture.  We talked a
bit about Naomi Wolf's video interview that I had sent out earlier and
that led to "How do we know what is true?"  How do we know when to take
risk taking action when there is so much mixed information out there –
so much propaganda!

And I noticed that I gave some incorrect info
– Naomi Kline wrote Shock Doctrine, not Naomi Wolf.  Wolf wrote "The
End of America" and the sequel – "The Handbook for American
Revolutionaries".
And maybe I will see you on Monday night!
