PARKS, RECREATION AND OPENSPACE PLAN At City Council Meeting (7:00PM - 9:00PM)
Monday, November 3rd, 7p.m. Public Hearing, City Council Meeting Bellingham City Hall, Council Chambers The new Parks (PRO) Plan is an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan and is proposing a huge reduction in available land for our City parks, and therefore more developable land for neighborhood infill. At the same time, there is little acknowledgement that the PRO Plan contradicts the City’s land supply analysis (used to determine that we must expand development into the farmland) and that internal inconsistency in our Comprehensive Plan is against the Growth Management Act mandates. Read the Planning Commission’s “Findings of Fact” on www.cob.org
The mission of the CITIZENS’ FORUM is to provide an opportunity for Bellingham citizens to participate in open dialogue, to exchange ideas, and to debate important issues regarding the future growth of our community. Changing The Dream Open Space Salon (7:00PM - 9:30PM)
The next
Changing the Dream Open Space Salon
Is Nov. 10th
Monday evening from 7 - 9:30pm
Arriving on time means the flow of conversation is uninterrupted With no need for updating and introducing new arrivals
Location: Cindi Landreth’s home
516 Ridgeway Dr. Bellingham
(See directions below)
Please consider coming to work toward building a world that will work for all: gather and share perspective, build community and awareness, inspire and be inspired about the changes we are facing with regards to issues around social justice, spiritual fulfillment and environmental issues.
If you would like to bring someone you feel is ‘up to speed’ on the issues, feel free to do so. We don’t want to spend a lot of time convincing people of what is going on – we want to connect, inspire, be inspired, re-frame, and….. get to the root of where we are and how we will face the changes – each of us…separately and together.
Also - @ 8:30am every Sunday morning (at the Public Market/Terra Organica) there is a group of people that meet to spend time in the wilderness – learning to track, learning to be stealth in the wild, learning plant and animal habits, learning more about ourselves, and it is open to YOU! You are all invited – we go at the pace of a 4 year old and an 86 year old so it is easy to keep up. We are there to ‘be’ rather than ‘do’. And we go no matter the weather! So, come prepared to stay dry and warm and bring some lunch! This Sunday we will be going to the Eagle Park in Deming – the Salmon and Eagles are coming home!! It is a great place to go tracking for other critters that feast on the salmon, too.
At our next Salon:
No particular topic planned per se – the magic of the conversation will arrive when you do!

BUF Fair Trade Event (7:00PM - 8:00PM)
Fair Trade is much more than a fair price! Fair Trade principles include: • Fair price • Fair labor conditions • Direct trade eliminating unnecessary middlemen • Democratic and transparent organizations • Community development • Environmental sustainability
Join the BUF and its Green Sancutary and Social Justice Teams for the film "Black Gold"- As westerners revel in designer lattes and cappuccinos, impoverished Ethiopian coffee growers suffer the bitter taste of injustice. In this eye-opening expose of the multi-billion dollar coffee industry, Black Gold traces one man's fight for a fair price. Multinational coffee companies now rule our shopping malls and supermarkets and dominate the industry worth over $80 billion, making coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But while we continue to pay for our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their coffee fields. Film conversations to follow and Fair Trade vendors available throughout the evening.
When: November 13, 2008 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Where: BUF Sanctuary Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship 1708 I St. Bellingham WA 98225

Western, Wind Energy, And Renewable Energy Credits: Setting A New Standard In Environmental Leadership (5:00PM - 6:30PM)
On Wednesday November 19th at 5pm, the Students for Renewable Energy
Club (SRE) will be hosting a Panel Presentation on Wind Energy and Renewable
Energy Credits (REC) in the Communications Facility room 125. The
panel is entitled “Western, Wind Energy, and Renewable Energy Credits: Setting a
New Standard in Environmental Leadership”. Western currently purchases 100% renewable energy by supporting a wind energy plant, thereby offsetting fossil fuel driven plants. A selection process was recently completed for who Western will buy their Renewable Energy Credits (REC) from in the future. The Panel discussion will focus primarily on an environmental economic analysis of REC’s and carbon trading by Professor Dan Hagen. Ron Bailey, Western’s Property Manager of Facilities Management, will discuss his role in the planning committee and also his endeavors to improve environmental sustainability on campus. Also, Rose Woofenden, the SRE President, will explain the history of SRE and our motivations behind buying 100% renewable energy. By hosting this presentation, SRE seeks to inform Western
Students and the public as to why Western students pay a renewable energy fee. Western’s REC program is setting a new standard in environmental leadership for other universities across the
country, and we hope to inspire the community to take similar actions to reduce their carbon emissions. The presentation has no cost and is open to the public. If you have any questions you can contact Andrea Thomas at thomasa8@cc.wwu.edu.

A showing of the documentary, Unconquering the Last Frontier: The Restoration of a River and a Culture in the Fairhaven auditorium on November 24th at 7 pm.
The documentary focuses on the construction of the 1910 dam on the Elwha River and the effect that it had on the Native Elwha Klallam people who relied heavily on the river.
The film describes the 90 year struggle of the Elwha tribal community to lobby for the removal of the dams and the restoration of the river’s ecology. The documentary will give a good background on the issue prior to the panel discussion on Tuesday, November 25th.

Elwha Dam Removals: Bringing About Ecological Restoration & Cultural Revitalization (7:00PM - 9:00PM)
Tuesday night will be a panel discussion in SMATE 150 at WWU on November 25th at 7 pm. The panel is made up of members of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, tribal youth, scientist, and representatives from the city of Port Angeles and the Olympic National Park.
The panel will be addressing the ecological and cultural impacts the dam has had on the region as well as what will happen once the dams are removed. The panel will give the audience a better understanding of colonialism, American Indian fishing rights and how activism and organizing pushed the removal process along.
This event will also address how environmental justice and social justice are intertwined. This panel discussion will be a great way to learn more about a long term local issue that has a solution in sight; and hear from the people directly linked to the restoration of the river and the culture of a community.
The second day of the two day Elwha event is put on by Western's Environmental Center, Social Issues Resource Center and Native American Student Union.
